Good Morning DC with Chief White House Correspondent Ksenija Pavlovic Mcateer

Good Morning DC. This morning, President Biden is starting early at the White House. At 8 am, he will speak at the Leaders Summit on Climate the USA is hosting virtually at the White House. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will also participate.

At 1:30 pm, Kerry and Psaki will brief the press.

Administration officials told Good Morning DC that Biden will commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030.

So far, President Biden reversed Trump's decision for the U.S. to leave the Paris Agreement. He also established a new 2030 emissions target – known as the "nationally determined contribution," a formal submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The President has a goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2050, and he intends to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At 9 am, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will talk in the panel at the Atlantic Council. He will address Serbia's regional and foreign policy priorities and the country's plan amid the pandemic.

At 2:00 pm at the State Department, Spokesperson Ned Price will brief the press.

At 5:30 pm, Acting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker will meet with Finnish Ambassador to the United States Mikko Hautala.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III issued a statement regarding the nomination of Dr. Ely Ratner as the assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs." There is simply no better person for the job. I am grateful to Ely for his commitment and willingness to serve, and I look forward to working with him. I urge the Senate to confirm Ely as soon as possible so he can take up this important work for our nation," he said.

What will Kamala do today?

At 8:00 am VP Kamala Harris will deliver remarks at the virtual Leaders Summit on Climate opening session in the East Room.

At 10:00 am she will convene a roundtable of foundation leaders on the Northern Triangle.

At 12:00 pm Harris and Biden will have lunch in the Private Dining Room.

At 3:45 pm, the President and the Vice President will receive a briefing from members of their COVID-19 Response Team on the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of vaccinations in the Oval Office.

Steve Scalise is not happy that the attack he endured on the baseball field FBI classified as "suicide by cop."

"I was shot by a deranged Leftist who came to the baseball field with a list of Congressional Republicans to kill.

This was NOT "suicide by cop."

End of story."

And that's a wrap for this Thursday morning, April 22, 2021. Thanks for waking up with Good Morning DC, a daily brief with a point of view. Good Morning DC will be back tomorrow to bring you the latest first.
