On Saturday, the impeachment Senate trial ended up in Trump's acquittal with no witnesses called. Following closing remarks, seven Republicans joined fifty Democrats to convict Trump, but the power in numbers was not there.
House impeachment managers did not take Trump's walk out of jail free card well, but neither did many senior Republicans. "I am disgusted. But I refuse to give in. I have been a Republican since ever before I could vote. I am sick about this", a source told Good Morning DC. Nikki Haley broke with Trump before the vote, and Mitch McConnel launched an attack on Trump contrary to his decision not to convict the former president. “President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he’s in office,” McConnell said. “He [Trump] didn’t get away with anything yet.”
“If only McConnell was so righteous as the Democrats trampled Trump and the Republicans while pushing Russia collusion bull**** for 3 years or while Dems incited 10 months of violence, arson, and rioting. Yea then he just sat back and did jack ****,” Don Jr hit back at McConnel.
In conversation with Chris Wallace of Fox News, Lindsey Graham said Lara Trump could take Senator Burr's seat in the senate when he retires next year. "My friend Richard Burr just made Lara Trump almost the certain nominee for the senate seat in North Carolina to replace him if she runs."
Graham made a public commitment that if Trump's daughter-in-law runs for office, he will "certainly be behind her because I think she represents the future of the Republican Party."
Trump issued a short statement immediately after the acquittal, saying that his MAGA movement “ has only just begun,” but other than that, he remained silent and off the media radar. What's he up to? Trump believes that he can help Republicans win back the House and the Senate in 2022.
What is the future of the Republican Party? GOP continues to splinter as Trump's loyalists go after Republicans who voted to convict Trump. “Let’s impeach RINOs from the Republican Party!!!” Don Jr called for political revenge on Twitter. GOP in Louisiana and North Carolina made a move already to censure senators Bill Cassidy and Richard Burr for voting to convict Trump.
“I made this decision because Americans should not be fed lies about ‘massive election fraud.’ Police should not be left to the mercy of a mob. Mobs should not be inflamed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power,” Senator Bill Cassidy stated in his Sunday column for The Advocate.
Mike Pence has opened an office in Virginia and is getting ready to throw his hat in the ring for the presidential run of 2024.
President Biden spent the weekend at Camp David with his family. On Saturday night, he issued a statement on Trump's acquittal to assure the public that he thinks President Trump is guilty irrespective of the outcome.
"Even those opposed to the conviction, like Senate Minority Leader McConnell, believe Donald Trump was guilty of a "disgraceful dereliction of duty" and "practically and morally responsible for provoking" the violence unleashed on the Capitol," said Biden.
"President Biden is now ready to lead without having to talk or comment on Trump," White House official told Good Morning DC.
Over the weekend, President Biden let TJ Ducklo go for threatening Politico's reporter.
"We are committed to striving every day to meet the standard set by the President in treating others with dignity and respect, with civility, and with a value for others through our words and our actions," said Jen Psaki. President Biden made a message clear that threatening a reporter cannot happen in America.
On Sunday morning, the president signed an executive order establishing the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, which will develop policies to "enlist, equip, enable, empower, and expand" the work of community-serving organizations, per the order's text.
Across the pond, Andrew Bridgen, Member of the UK parliament, penned a column for The Pavlovic Today, on The Politics of Vaccine Reluctance. As America grapples with sending children back to schools, in the UK, all schoolchildren will return to the classroom on March 8, 2021.
Over the weekend, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, who recently won in the High Court against Mail on Sunday over the publication of the letter to her father, announced that she is expecting a second child.
Facebook and Google are getting close to reaching a deal that would pay for news content as Australia is ready to approve the first laws in the world that would force social networks to pay for journalism.
This morning, New Zealand will enter into a new lockdown due to the recent COVID variant outbreak. In Guinea, a new Ebola outbreak has been declared, WHO confirmed. What will Biden do today? At 3:10 PM EST, the President will return to the White House from Camp David.
Heads up: On Tuesday, the President will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to participate in a CNN town hall. On Thursday, Biden will travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to tour a Pfizer manufacturing site and meet with the workers who are producing the COVID-19 vaccine. On Friday, Biden will join a G7 virtual meeting "in the first gathering of G7 leaders since April 2020," announced the White House.
