At Star Cafe in Atlanta, VP Pence and Governor Kemp talk about safely re-opening of Georgia.
VP Mike Pence: GEORGIA HAS LED THE WAY
"It is great to be back in Georgia a state that has been leading the way in opening up America. It's a great tribute to Gov Kemp and his leadership not just during the reopening, also a tribute to the people of the state, the people of this country to see the progress that we have made."
"Georgia has led the way, the people of Georgia have led the way by demonstrating every day that it's possible to open up restaurants like this great restaurant, to open up retail operations... and we hope around the country to be able to open up places of worship very soon and do that in a way that continues to be mindful of all we've learned about coronavirus and continue to practice the safe and healthy measures to see our nation through this time. We are getting there.
"In a very real senseI think history will record that Georgia helped lead the way back to a prosperous American economy."
GEORGIA REOPENING EARLY
VP Pence says WH offered tools to governors and trusted states to make decisions and acknowledged POTUS concerns.
"The president expressed those reservations about some aspects of Georgia's plan at the time. As gov Kemp knows and the American people know, you always know where you stand with President Donald Trump.
"I must tell you the president and I couldn't be more proud of the progress the people of Georgia have made, of the steady advance of the reopening of this economy safely and responsibly."
Said there were lessons for other states, for example deploying National Guard to clean nursing homes. "It's not something we think of citizen soldiers doing. But they all stepped up, did their job and undoubtedly impacted the lives and health of people in long-term care facilities."
GOVERNOR KEMP ON CRITICISM FOR REOPENING EARLY
"I'm not too worried about critics that are out there. I'm making decisions on science and public health advice."
VP MIKE PENCE: The people of Georgia have proven them wrong every day
"Gov Brian Kemp has proven them wrong every day. The people of Georgia have proven them wrong every day."
"There isn't a governor in a state or territory in this country that hasn't done everything in their power to put the health and wellbeing of their people first.
VP ON PHASE 4 TALKS
"Those are actively underway. Our focus is going to be on the American people and speeding additional support as needed to American families who have seen their livelihoods impacted so dramatically."
Continue to support the PPP which helped businesses like the Star Cafe.
"I can personally attest this might be the best meatloaf I have ever had in my life."
"Issues like liability protection are going to be very important. As businesses reopen we want them to be able to reopen confidently, that as they operate within specific guidelines that are issued by CDC and others that they can do so confidently.
"And then finally we are talking to members of congress about President Trump; desire to see a payroll tax. Again if we were to have a payroll tax cut that would put 7.6% back in pockets of American people who are still working immediately.
It would increase take-home pay by 7.6%..."
"We want to have policies that encourage growth in the economy. We think a payroll tax cut and other measures, like restoring the deduction for buying a meal in a restaurant as a business, we think all of those kinda things could make a real difference in reviving the American economy."
VP said it was not a choice between health and the economy but between health and health when you consider drawbacks of cancelled elective surgeries etc.
"The example that Georgia is setting is an example to the nation, that we can build on the progress we've made, we can put our communities back to work, we can open up America again."
